Driving Instructor Training: Eligibility
If you are thinking about becoming a driving instructor, then there are a few criteria for eligibility. You are always welcome to get in touch with our team if you have any questions about getting started, but to become a driving instructor in the UK you must:

Have had a valid driver’s license for over 3 years ✔

Complete a full DBS check ✔
Driving Instructor Training: What It Involves
Becoming an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) consists of three tests:
Step 1: To get approved for the training, you must be cleared with a DBS check from the DVSA. You must have no more than 6 points on your licence to pass this step. With government approval, you will be given a Personal Reference Number (PRN) and you can begin your instructor theory test.
Step 2: After you have passed your theory test, your practical learning can begin. We recommend a minimum of 10 hours of lessons leading up to taking a two-part Enhanced Driving Test. You must score no more than 6 minors on this test.
Step 3: Having passed this test, you will then begin instructor training. This typically involves 40-60 hours of learning. At 40 hours we can sign you off for real teaching, initially on a trainee licence for 6-12 months. During this period, we will sponsor you under our academy–meaning you can earn as you learn. We provide pupils on your trainee license with full ongoing training and support.
Step 4: Finally, you will take a teaching ability test. Here, an examiner will sit in the back to assess your teaching during a real lesson. This is based on various criteria and is scored out of 51, with a minimum score of 31 required to be signed off. Once you have successfully passed this test, you can be signed off to the ADI register.
